ABOUT US

Toes and Paws for Green Space is an advocacy group aiming to promote inclusiveness at Potrero Hill and Dogpatch parks for all members of the neighborhood. We are residents, business owners, families, dog owners, dog lovers, and park lovers who have come together to ensure our parks remain places for everyone to enjoy.

OUR GOAL

Few parks on Potrero Hill and Dogpatch have the acreage and environment everyone – “dog families,” “kid families,” seniors, and singles – can enjoy. The housing explosion will soon put new pressure on these neighborhood treasures. More “dog runs” won’t fill the bill. We want to preserve the special character of parks like Esprit and McKinley – and work to create more.

WHO WE ARE

We are a group of frequent neighborhood park users. We are dog owners but also people who like to watch dogs play or have our children interact with dogs – without necessarily owning one. We advocate for spaces that safely and comfortably integrate – not segregate – diverse park users.

WHAT ‘DOG FAMILIES’ NEED

So far, the trend is create more, fenced-in “dog runs.”  But even the largest of these inevitably crowd together dogs big and small and of varying temperaments. Many are paved with coarse gravel that is rough on small paws. Some dogs just want to sniff bushes and  trees and roll around in grass. Others, especially bigger dogs, want room to run. Leash-only regulations prohibit giving one’s dog proper exercise.

WHAT ‘KID FAMILIES’ NEED

Parents shouldn’t have to worry about their children encountering dog waste. We strongly endorse responsible dog supervision. But we also see dogs and children happily interacting every day, parents who aren’t ready to have a pet letting their children get used to being around and learning how to behave safely around dogs.

WHAT WE ALL NEED

A Place To:

  • Relax away from the hustle of the city;
  • Take a stroll among the birds and trees;
  • Get some outdoor exercise;
  • Put out a blanket and get some sun;
  • Sit on a bench with a cup of coffee and people/dog watch;
  • Meet our neighbors, new and old;
  • Chat with people outside our normal circles;
  • Build community in Potrero and Dogpatch.
